Scooterworks

Last year, whilst working on the Tunnel 228 project with Punch Drunk I was introduced to a café that has evolved from a Vespa garage. Scooterworks is full of Italian flea-market finds, most notably a working 1950s Faema lever espresso machine, which serves fantastic coffee. The choice of music is wonderfully eclectic (on my first visit there, the Italian barista was singing an Aria).

Royal College of Art graduates Valerio Di Lucente, Erwan Lhuissier and Hugo Timm founded Julia in 2008 and have subsequently produced various books, typefaces, posters, websites, identities and exhibitions.
Among the great work was Issue 5 of Volt (pictured), an independent fashion magazine published twice a year. “It differs from the average magazine by being very large, unbound, and consisting almost exclusively of big size photographs. ”

It’s pretty astounding to learn that photographer Martin Parr has authored over sixty photography books since 1974. In celebration, Rocket Gallery are showing the books alongside a great little exhibition and you’ve got a couple more weeks to get there. Prolificacy defined.

Stolen Moments

Not quite a music video post this morning, but some moving image none the less. I’ve been following Spine TV for a little while and am always impressed by their artists video series, Stolen Moments. Simply shot, informative interviews with some really great creatives. Embedded is a bit of a personal favourite with the more than welcoming Michael Marriott.

Strangeness and Charm is an incredibly apt title for the most recent show at Viktor Wynd by London’s Kate MccGwire. Astounding sculptures made with a intricacy and care that need to be seen in the flesh to be appreciated fully. Luckily, the show runs until the middle of March, so you’ve got more than ample chance. We’re very pleased to have Kate as our guest on the blog this week, so you can see what makes her tick as well as appreciate her stunning collection of work.

The idea of working at Studio Number One, the design studio headed by by Shepard Fairey is probably a dream for tons of West Coast students. Zach Gibson is a graduate from Philadelphia, who moved to L.A and made the dream a reality before heading back to school to start a masters. Obviously not one to be daunted by a bit of hard graft, the results are there for all to see and we were keen to catch up with him before everyone else did too. (read more)

During a conversation with the illustrator Luke Best we both simultaneously mentioned the book ‘Works on Paper’ by Neo Rauch as one of the most inspiring things we had seen. It gives me that visceral desire to draw more!
Impossible Lamp

What could you do with a totally heat-resistant lamp? Put a candle on it of course. Nice little thought from Jeeves Basu. “Switch on a lamp made of wax and it should melt and disintegrate in seconds. But due to the unique way it has been designed, the Impossible Lamp does not. It is a lamp made of wax that works without melting. “

Falmouth graduate Richard Marsden has got some interesting work. With a distinct documentary feel to it I’m a big fan of his Hot Tub series, pictured here.
“Discover a place where stress reduction and relaxation are more than just a luxury, but a way of life… a place where affordable dreams become reality… close to home… yet secluded. Welcome to a world of tranquility”

How To Explain It To My Parents?
- Posted by Alex
- 2 February 2010
One of the questions that always interests me most is our ‘Guest Post’ interviews is “What do your parents think you do?”, for obvious reasons the results are varied. So, when I saw Lernert & Sander’s series tackling the same subject I was drawn in. Well filmed and uncomplicated, the relationship of a fine artist and their folks is laid bare for the viewer to envy or sympathise.
