KK Job Centre

Date

With thousands of students graduating a design related course this year it’s difficult to comprehend how they will all find work. Fortunately for one collective of graduating students, KK Outlet have come to the rescue with the opportunity of showcasing their work in their London gallery space.

Recognising the cost implications that go into organising a degree show in London, KKOutlet held an open call for entries at the start of the year to design and advertising graduates for the use of their gallery for the entire month of July. With the great location, audience and space they were inundated with applications. The selected entry was Just Us, a collective made up of graduates from various institutions across the country.

Set up at the start of the year by three final year graphic design students from Plymouth College of Art, Mark Grant, Simon Zinn and William Hibberd. The idea was to showcase young and emerging creative talent from universities and colleges across the UK and has now grown to a collective of 42 designers and illustrators.

The selected idea was KK Job Centre, a kitsch take on the classic set up, with tongue-in-cheek references to the social and economic problems associated with the current credit-crunch recession. All of this is a reaction to the student fears of finding jobs after graduating university.

The interior of KK Outlet has been transformed into a mock job centre with queues leading nowhere, disgruntled job seekers and even a ticket machine to take your turn in the interview room. All this alongside the work of the 20 graduating students from the collective, the variety of these students from different courses just adds to the diversity of work on show.

From Tom Coombes witty The Great Graphics Tash Bash and Jessie Douglas’ beautiful illustration to Tom Lovell and Sean Hughes’ strong typographic work the show just seems to work. It doesn’t have that feel of an illustration show or a designers show where you can almost become too familar with the work before you’ve seen it all. Due to the diversity of work on show you are constantly finding someone else’s work to take in, all this alongside features like On Hold that plays music down the phone this is a light hearted but professional approach to the all too standard degree show.

KK Jobs Centre Opens tonight and runs from 2- 27 July 2009
