Anthony Burrill – In A New Place

Kemistry Gallery launch Anthony Burrill’s new show tonight, In A New Place. Anthony’s latest work has taken a new direction to include large installation pieces as well as more recently exploring coloured perspex for an exhibition at Colette.

The show opening tonight in the east London gallery is all new work following on from his show in Paris, and it is a refreshingly bold statement from a designer who has made the style his own. We visited Anthony at the gallery while he was installing the pieces to find out a bit more about the work and process involved.

Anthony, can you tell us a little bit about the show.

Well [Kemistry Gallery] invited me to do it and it’s the third show I’ve had this year, I had the one at Mother with Michael [Marriott], then the one at Colette and then this one, so I wanted to do more laser cut perspex because it was successful for the Collette show and it feels like a nice medium to use. So using the archetypal landscapes, but using the mirror to make it feel more glamorous.

And how did that process come about?

I had an idea about making work out of perspex because of all the real hard edge stuff that I do and the purity of the colours you can get. Working with those materials you get such a presence, more than a print.

How much testing was there involved?

We just made a small version and after that they pretty much knew how to do it. So they start with the black back panel and they engrave that with the design so they’ve got a guideline, and then all the colours are cut out and bonded on.

For the show there’s also a series of prints available, all availble in an edition of six, can you tell us a bit more about them and the reason behind the small edition.

Well previously we’d done prints and to sell more than seven or eight of an edition is quite rare really so I thought if I’m only going to sell 6 it’d be nice to sell the entire edition.

In A New Place runs from 24 July — 5 September 2009
