Graduates 2010: Romilly Winter

Date

Next up on the graduates feature is Romilly Winter, a graphic design graduate from the University of the West of England.

Having parents in the book auctioneering business he developed a love for print and typography from an early age and looking back, probably inspired the decision to study graphic design. Having become interested in the role of creativity within primary education, Romilly and fellow designer David Gibson held a series of workshops in a local Bristol school called The Art Club designed to encourage creativity in schools.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I was always someone that could never make up their mind when thinking about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I considered being a pilot when I was younger that’s for sure. But I found it quite difficult to properly decide what I should be and didn’t come to the decision that graphic design was the career of choice until I was about 18 or 19, the only thing I did know was that it would be creative in some way.

In reflection, how bad was your work in the first year?

Embarrassingly bad, whenever I find it in my parents attic I try my best to get rid of it, but I think my first year was full of experimentation which helped me in the long run and at the end of the year I do remember having one of those ‘turning point’ moments which made me think a bit more clearly about what kind of work I wanted to do in the future.

If you could show a piece of your folio to one person, what piece would you choose, and who would you show it to?

I think at the moment I would probably show The Art Club publication to Ken Robinson or Dave Eggers to see if they think the project as a whole was a success. I would also like to ask either of them if they wanted to join myself and David on a tour with The Art Club to make it a traveling workshop.

If you had your own studio, who would you share it with and why?

I would share a studio with all the guys I have enjoyed Bristol with for the last 3 years, when we worked on a branding job in our last year of university we had a lot of fun and we keep saying we’ll set something up together, so I’ll look forward to that.

If you’ve got any left, what will you spend the last of your student loan on?

Well there isn’t any left, but if there was it would probably go towards some new furniture, I know its boring… either that or I’d fill a football table with 50p’s just trying to beat my friends.

Where will we find you in 12 months?

Wow, thats a long time away but I can almost definitely say London, so hopefully in a studio, I’ve got a big list of places I want to approach… Perhaps even freelancing from my own space. I am keen to try lots of places out first, I don’t have a strict plan as yet which has worked for me in the past. I think you would at least find me doing what I love.
