Not content with being named designer of the year (in the consumer magazines category) at the PPA magazine awards last month for his work as Art Director of UK Wired, but Andrew Diprose also self publishes The Ride with his brother Philip.

The Ride is a magazine about bikes by people who love bikes, the only difference being that you won’t find any reviews or race reports, just personal stories of bike related content accompanied by great illustration and photography. We caught up with Andrew to find out more…

How did The Ride come about? When did you start it and what was the idea?

A few friends on a riding trip wondered if we could create a journal that had the attitude and soul of Surfers Path, but for two wheels. There’s no ‘how to get fit guides’, no ‘buy this bike’ guides… Just stories, photography and illustration inspired by riding. Whatever the bike.

How do you decide what to include, how do people submit?

People can get in touch with us if they have an idea for something they think might be appropriate. We also go after individuals that we think have a good story to tell, or a style we admire. As word and reputation of the journal spreads it gets a little easier to find the right contributors.

How do you go about matching the illustration to the stories?

We try and match the feel of the story to the style of artist. There’s such a great mix of styles in the journal now, as well as a visual feast for the bike fan we hope it’s a great place to discover different and very diverse artists. We are very fortunate to have readers that range from riders to design-loving riders to just design lovers.

What can we expect from future issues?

We’re already excited about issue V, we got in some great material already. I’d like to go heavier on some of the photo-essays… My brother Phil the editor, wants more words… Ah, the joy of the editorial process!

What bike do you ride?

The bikes we ride very much depend on the season, our mood and the weather. It could be a spot of cyclo-cross,  some sweet road, a track bike round town or Herne Hill or down on the Surrey Hills mountain biking. If you’re into your bikes… You’re really get into your bikes!
