This week we question water’s elemental make-up, lazily use a back cover blurb and reveal the possibility of death being something like psychedelic madness. There are at least 97 worse things you could do on a Saturday morning than read the latest edition of Things.
Of Recklessness and Water Elizabeth Weinberg
There are different kinds of water. Appearances differ so dramatically depending on specific factors – weather, landscape, time – that it’s not outrageous to suggest that the contents of a lake, for example, are different in elemental make-up to that of a sea. Elizabeth Weinberg’s photo-book, Of Recklessness and Water, sentimentally proves the point above: that water is a force capable of chameleonic change but is always – always – fun, wondrous, magical.

The Picture Book Angus Hyland, Laurence King
“Compiled by award-winning designer Angus Hyland, The Picture Book presents a broad spectrum of styles, techniques and subject matter representative of current trends and innovations to create a stunning contemporary illustration.” Yikes. Call me lazy, but this back cover blurb pretty much says it all.

Summer Skulls Posters Telegramme
Skulls normally = death and/or general bad stuff. But not these things. These things are skulls on lsd; skulls made of flowers, not bone; skulls that make death look something like psychedelic madness.

Zeit – Visuelle Untersuchungen Stefan Kaetz
A final diploma project, Zeit – Visuelle Untersuchungen contains various visual representations of time neatly divided into three chapters. The most effective (at least visually) is part 2 – an 8-page section consisting of highly intricate op-art-inspired illustrations that depict the ‘continuum’ as warped, swelling and beautifully complex.

The Funeral Barnaby Richards, Atlantic Press
The Funeral is all kinds of weird: good-weird, almost-scary weird, far-beyond-any-previous-conceptions-of-weird weird. And brilliant, too, in a “this is weird but I love it” sort of way.
