Household

Household is a collective formed and manned by RCA graduates George Wu and Sarah Gottlieb. They have a self-confessed strong focus on interchanging skills through collaboration, and their body of work is one great depth, and I’m sure there’s lots more to follow. We asked them a few questions and had a browse through their folio…

You both studied at the RCA, why did you decide to do a masters rather than go straight into work after you graduated?
We decided to go for a masters for different reasons: Sarah always had the intention of setting up a studio, but rather then going to work, she felt a masters would expose her to like minded people. It proved to be the more direct approach. After her BA, George worked in a graphic design studio for 4 years and during that time started making animations. After much encouragement she decided to take the leap and do a masters to pursue film, but the graphic design never left.

Do you think it’s important to work with someone else?
Definately. The main asset to how we work, is that we are already very different from each other. The work we have done wouldn’t have happened individually. The idea of the collective initially started with a series of workshops about the interchanging of skills through collaboration and it made sense to continue. Now with our work, we actively look for practitioners from unfamiliar fields to collaborate with. Working this way, we are able to do projects which are new for everybody involved. Besides it’s much more fun eating chocolate at 2 in the morning with someone else than alone.

What do you fight about?
The Colour green, it’s Sarah’s favourite colour and George’s worst, some how all our projects begin green until the ceremonal fight happens. Also language barriers can cause harsh misunderstandings but that will all change once George’s Danish improves.

What’s your must-have household item?
S: A good knife
G: And a vacuum cleaner… can deal with all manner of problems.

What are you working on today?
Today we’re working on an animantion-machine installation called The Animatic together with our frequent collaborator Yuri Suzuki, he’s amazing. It will be part of the DesignMiami/Fendi project Craft Punk 2009. It will be showing later this month at the Spazio FENDI, 22nd-24th April during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. In essence, it’s a physical music video and should be quite spectacular!

What will you be working on tomorrow?
The same! It’s intense, the structure covers a 5×5m space and our studio is 3m wide. We’re sharing a desk now, it’s very cosy.
