Esther Pearl Watson

Date
17 November 2010

The good news about the paintings of Esther Pearl Watson is that they are beautiful, haunting portraits of her experience growing up in North Texas. The great news about her paintings is that many of them prominently feature flying saucers. Apparently, her father was in the habit of making space ships out of scrap metal. So even these outlandish elements are mostly autobiographical. Whatever the case, Watson’s paintings are at once personal and universal. She manages to use the unique imagery of her youth to evoke the strangeness and mystery of youth in general.
