Bright, playful graphic design from Russian studio A-2-O

Poor old Studio A-2-O. Its site has been hacked by Turk Hack Team and now looks like this, with some less than aesthetically-pleasing graphics taking the place of the studio’s usual output, which is rather lovely. Thankfully though, there’s a Behance site that shows off their projects, and the one that caught our eye in particular was the identity for Bereza, a milling workshop in Russia. The name is Russian for birch tree, a signifier which has fed into the logotype design, which the studio says uses letters arranged “in a way that represents an abstract pattern of birch tree bark.”

It goes on: “The company’s logo reflects the main function of a milling machine, cutting various shapes and forms out of a single block of wood. The cut out shapes are then used throughout the Bereza identity as they are combined and transformed in sculptures and small furniture pieces.” This forms a beautifully adaptable identity with multiple different arrangements and patterns for different applications, forming an ever-changing but cohesive visual language. We love the bright colours and playful, hand-crafted feel, with the bold brights and retina-demanding prints showing no small affection for Memphis. What they also show, though, is A-2-O’s ability to take a traditional brand and dress it up with fun, contemporary design.
