Astonishingly rendered animals meet their maker in humorously gross Accidents, Blunders and Calamities

44 students from Media Design School in Auckland have produced a digitally animated short film detailing the ABCs of untimely animal demise.

One part showreel, the short film has a narrative not unlike The Gruffalo, with an animal family snuggling down to story time in their treetop den as narrative frame. What transpires here is far more dark, as each rendered animal through the alphabet is meticulously bumped off.

Of course no real animals were harmed in the making of the calamitous short film, with each of the 30 animals depicted entirely digitally rendered by students at the college. Inspired by the wit of the works of Edward Gorey, each animal life is alliteratively, humorously and inventively snuffed out: from an adder snagged by an arrow, to “Peter the possum pickled in potion…Quentin the quail quashed by a quince."

The short film has been screened at film festivals and conventions internationally, and was included in the official selection of SXSW Film Festival, New York International Children’s Festival and Sydney Film Festival. It is due to be screened at San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival this July.
