Photography: Acacia Johnson goes on polar adventures for our viewing pleasure

Date
10 February 2014

I wouldn’t have guessed that being born and brought up in Alaska would have anybody yearning to spend their life in cold climates, but in Acacia Johnson’s case this is exactly how it panned out. “When I dream, I dream of cold wind” she explains, and it’s blown her all the way to Iceland, Norway and others in the search for perpetual golden light and naturally beautiful landscapes.

These images are from Polaris, an ongoing project in which she documents exactly those landscapes that so enchant her – and it’s easy to see why. Soft tones and barrage of pale whites and greys make for a strangely gentle viewing experience, so that even in the depths of February when walking outside is akin to stepping into a drizzly freezer, I almost want to go somewhere colder.
