Alex Lukas' creative explorations construct a refreshing visual mix

Alex Lukas is a Pittsburgh-based artist whose work crosses the boundaries between painting, illustration, collage and graphic design. By cherry picking all the delicious bits from each of these practices, Alex creates work with familiar tendencies into something utterly refreshing.

After studying a BFA at Rhode Island School of Design, Alex is currently studying for an MFA at Carnegie Mellon University. Whilst there the artist has extended his practice to include a realm of creative tendencies, including his own publishers Cantab Publishing. However it was Alex’s illustrational based pieces that really caught our eye. The untitled works display a mix of ink, acrylic, gouache, watercolour, oil, spray paint, each built on top of screen-printed paper. Within exhibitions these works are either framed, designed into books or accompanied with still life pieces representative of the printed matter, including tiles, rocks, wood panels and plants.

Overall, the artist displays the artistic joy that can be found in the exploration of practices. Alex never limits himself to one medium but additionally displays an ability to balance practice; his broad mix of creativity elegantly avoids outweighing one another.
