2010 Review: Alex Moshakis

Date
27 December 2010

Our 2010 Review turns inwards this week, as each member of It’s Nice That offers their own thoughts on the last 12 months. First up, yours truly…

My image of the year: “Big Brother ended in September. I took pictures of the final final with my phone’s camera, and hope to sell the results as ‘nostalgic’ prints sometime in the future.”

Mark out of 10 for 2010?

2010 has been one of my best years. I feel like I’ve been in education without having been in education. I’ve also met and worked with many great people. I award it a 9.

What broke? How did you fix it?

This time last year I was given a set of kitchen utensils that I either used too aggressively or were just plain shoddy. I’m pretty sure they lasted a week, and were not fixed. Very little else broke, which I’m grateful for.

What was the best thing you saw this year?

Roel mentioned the home-made spacecraft. There was also this, and this.

What was your favourite day of the year?

I recently dreamt I ran over Little Richard. He was OK, seemed grateful, said ‘thanks for the opportunity.’ The dream was followed by a couple of insanely surreal (borderline hypnopompic) hours during which a man told me he liked my shoes, that he had a pair himself, and that he was going to start ‘cutting people up.’ This was perhaps my favourite day of the year, although nicer things happened (mainly in July).

Most dangerous/scariest moment?

It would have been setting off slightly damp market-stall fireworks in a redundant gravel-covered space opposite a Latvian hostel, had some friends and I done that instead of (legally) firing Glocks within a Soviet-era bunker.

Best Google image search of 2010?

I googled many things this year, mainly for ‘inspiration.’ They included: ‘Tomoo Gokita,’ ‘girls looking at other girls as if jealous,’ ‘thematic unity,’ ‘intense danger’ and ‘dodecahedron.’

At one point I googled ‘Frank Cornelius.’

Best man/woman of the year?

Dick Proenneke died in 2003, but I read about him for the first time in August. I therefore choose you, Dick.

Your finest moment?

This year I went to a wedding in shorts.

If you could only take one thing that you bought in 2010 into 2011, what would it be?

A recently purchased woolen jumper, I think. Thanks to frighteningly damaging moths, most of my older jumpers are little more than bits of material clinging to other bits of material.

What would you like to say to 2010?

In reaction to an ever-increasing fear that my four-year-old godson is more intelligent than I am – he’s beaten me at chess, twice, and actually understands what the word ‘hypnopompic’ means – I would say ‘goodbye’ in many difficult languages within his earshot. I’m pretty sure this would impress him.
