Angoulême Winners: Frank and the Congress of Animals

Date
3 February 2012

We’d never claim to be psychic, but there was an air of serendipity to the announcement that Jim Woodring (to whom we gave a little retrospective “hurrah!” at the start of Angoulême) took home the Special Jury Prize on Sunday. It’s great to see recognition for a man who remains our benchmark for the joy of what a comic book can be. Jim was honoured for Frank and the Congress of the Beasts, the fifth episode chronicling the adventures of the now infamous feline who’s graced his pages for decades. A classic Woodring wordless narrative that’s surreal, spooky and poetic.
