Angouleme Winners: Ta Mere La Pute

Date
2 February 2012

The Prix Revelation went to this gritty comic from Gilles Rochier. Throughout his career Rochier has drawn from his own childhood to tackle issues of poverty, boredom and restless youth culture. Ta Mere La Pute falls along similar lines; a tale of realism and urban ennui set in the 1970s, the story follows a group of teenagers as they wander a city, avoiding the bus stops where some of their mothers work as prostitutes. An examination of misfortune and circumstance, Gilles’ comic “evokes with precision and ease the bittersweet memories of a youth lived in the suburbs.” A worthy read, no doubt.
