Angoulême Winners: Une Vie dans le Marges 2
Born in Osaka in 1935, Yoshihiro Tatsumi was at the head of an alternative manga vanguard in the late fifties, circumventing the childish connotations for the comic medium and developing instead the gekiga style: a term that describes serious stories for adult readers, allowing artists to inject realism into a fantasy based genre. Awarded the Views on the World prize (Prix Regards Sur le Monde) at Angoulême, Tatsumi’s book Une Vie Dans les Marges 2 is a first-hand account of comics in post-war Japan, a docu-memoir and historical document aptly told in the same style that helped revolutionise the medium in the first place.
