Graphic Design: Clever site Anitype allows you to animate letters with JavaScript

Date

Merging animation and typography, two of the trickiest areas graphic design has to offer, Jono Brandel (a designer and developer over at Google) has kindly taken it upon himself to explore the endlessly interesting question; what if letters could move? And not only is he asking about the possibility of animated type, he’s also answering it with his website Anitype.

The site allows users to animate letters using Javascript, experimenting with their ideas and then publishing the outcomes to a collection of entries online. The resulting catalogue of somersaulting, twitching, twirling letters makes for excellent perusing material, while the section dedicated to manipulating the letter of your choice functions as either an easy gateway for type novices (like myself) or an excellent form of procrastination for the more experienced. Sounds like several hours well wasted to me.
