Illustration: beautiful mark making and subtle humour from Anna Topuriya

Date
6 June 2013

Illustrator Anna Topuriya is adept at the kind of whimsical dream-like illustration that we’re particularly partial to here at It’s Nice That. Her beautifully fluid ink washes and colourful gouaches are bursting with movement and pace, seemingly created almost instantaneously yet crafted with exceptional skill. Anna’s illustrated world seems to be set in a fictional 1970s Los Angeles, where the sun’s permanently shining, everyone’s on their way to a beach and the men are absurdly buff (though they’re pretty bizarre-looking too). It’s not all whimsy and sunshine though. Anna has a gift for telling stories with subtle, emotive narratives that communicate complex sentiments with only a few simple lines. Beeyootiful.
