Meticulous and mesmerising collage work from Anthony Gerace

At first glance Anthony Gerace’s collages look like orderly mosaics. Using imagery mostly found in magazines from the 1920s through to the 1950s which he has painstakingly cut and rearranged, Anthony has assembled an impressive series of work spanning the last four years. Combining a rigorous process with intuitive compositions, faces are partially fragmented in colourful arrangements of perfectly cut squares and take on new meaning. “My work has always encompassed both an intuitive and a mechanical approach,” Anthony explains. “Throughout a lot of my work I’ve been dealing with the idea that the ephemeral elements of the past are confused and forgotten almost instantly, and that our recollections aren’t of specifics but rather of tones, moods, and textures, and I wanted to turn that thinking to people and places, as well.”

Four years of Anthony’s collages will make up an exhibition of his work in Milan in November.
