Spanish artist Berto Fojo’s colourful and unsettling cast of characters

Date
22 January 2016

At first glance, the colourful characters created by Berto Fojo might appear playful but on closer inspection his creations seem troubled and ridden with angst. His images are fuelled by a dark sense of humour and an ability to create characters that have bags of charisma.

Artist, musician and teacher Berto lives and works in Pontevedra, Spain. Before embarking on his career Berto studied fine art at the Universidade de Vigo and a Masters in design at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His work focuses on painting, drawing and character designing and he plays in two bands.

Last year Berto produced a concertina book called Nadas Mortos filled with character portraits for Spanish publisher Jerseys para los Monos and has provided illustration for the likes of Snacks Quarterly and El Comidista in Tentaciones, El País newspaper’s monthly supplement.
