Carlijn Jacobs adds glamour to her ethereal fashion photography

Amsterdam-based photographer Carlijn Jacobs has been busy working on various commercial and editorial projects since we featured her last year. Carlijn has an impressive roster of clients including Vogue, Y/Project, Glamcult, Teeth, and i-D.

In these most recent works, Carljin’s ethereal style has developed into more glamorous territory and the photographer sees her images as “poetic, surreal, dark and ironic”. Light and shadow play an important part in her photographs and in these Kate Bush-like set ups, Carlijn conveys more than just a fashion story but sets up deeper, more ambiguous narratives.

Her work is crisply shot with a great sensibility for colour and contrast, and this feeds into her compositions. Finding references “too limiting”, the photographer feels general life is her biggest influence, looking to the world, people, art, history and the future for inspiration. When working on a project, Carljin’s process is all consuming. “There’s lots of thinking, preparing and just doing. It’s organising everything that’s in your mind and needing to get it out as soon as possible,” she explains.

The photographer’s portfolio mainly consists of editorial projects created for various magazines and it’s something Carlijn takes joy in creating. “I think it feels the same as feeding your hunger. You just have to,” she says. “I love working on editorial projects because I’m given the ability to create and creation is wonderful.”
