Illustrator Carmen Frontera animates her characters with frantic legs and cheeky winks

Date

Spanish illustrator Carmen Frontera creates joyously simple line-drawn characters, then adds small animated quirks to bring them to life. Frantic legs, cheeky winks and the wavering cloud of steam from a cup of tea are some of the tricks the Valencia-based artist uses to add flourish to her illustrations, and it makes them all the more rib-tickling.

The most recent of her characters reoccurs in two illustrations, both using Shrigley-inspired line drawings and bright primary colours. In one instance, she sits pensively at a table; in another she lies contently on a beach towel. Both are only animated by her cup of tea, and the music coming from her laptop, and in their simplicity they are brilliantly delightful.
