Charlotte Mei’s paintings of abstracted, contorted and lazy bods

Date

Illustrator and ceramicist Charlotte Mei has been working away on a series of paintings featuring abstracted and contorted figures. “They are studies in colour, all of observed stuff and friends. Some bodies are loungey, some more contorted. It’s cool to think how much you can explore and express with your bod,” she says.

We have featured Charlotte’s ceramics and favourite books before; and in this series of paintings we see people doing yoga poses, bobbing around in water and pulling relaxed but poised shapes on the floor. Charlotte says she has “been getting really interested in looking at the human body as art, sculpture or a canvas for emotion. But I don’t want to make out like I have this serious concept in my head always. I mostly paint for fun!”
