A minimal look for ace young photographer journal, Collection of Documentaries

Date

We’ve loved photographic journal Collection of Documentaries longtime, and its third issue has recently arrived with a whole new design and another impressive roster of young photographic talent. The mag was edited and co-founded by Lee Crichton alongside Winter Vandenbrink, who aim to bring together the best burgeoning photographers out there, and lays out the mag with his graphic designer girlfriend. This issue’s contributors include Bertrand le Pluard, Fanny Schlichter, Studio Boyo and Winter Vandenbrink.

This latest issue uses a beautifully minimal design, with an all-grey cover with just the sliver of title text for decoration. According to Lee, the aim is to make the publication more like a book than a magazine, and each issue takes a gradually darker tone than the last. Once you’ve collected all ten in the series, it’ll form a gradient from white to black.

“Issue 3 sees Collection of Documentaries refining its recognisable and elegant approach to collective creation and publication,” says Lee. “COD pushes forward with its themes of youth culture and ‘real Britain’, projecting the visual discourse these subject matters present onto a worldwide platform.”

He adds: “I think Fanny Schlicter is incredible and her shoots in the magazine really reflect what’s our mood in issue 3 – trippy, hippie pages of beauty…I would describe COD to date as homoerotic, violent, nostalgic and real.”

The weight and physicality of the tome are the perfect foundations for its staunchly IRL existence: there’s no digital version at all, so best get your hands on one, sharpish.
