Exotic and abstract work from printmaker Daniel Fletcher

Date
22 September 2015

Since graduating from LCC earlier this year, London-based printmaker Daniel Fletcher has been busy turning out simple and sunny work from his Peckham studio and self-started printing press Yucca Press. Made in the lead up to his residency at Peckham Print Studio, one such particularly lush and exotic series, From the Dominican, takes motifs and vibrant logos from fruit and vegetable packaging as its starting point.

Characterised by flat, simplified forms and bold but modest compositions, Daniel’s work is actually part of a considered process. He first works with cut-outs to outline his image, making maquettes and playing with various compositions before he moves forward with printing. “I also use mono prints as a more immediate way of working and I can get ideas down quickly and freely this way,” he explains. “As colour is so central to my work I spend a considerable amount of time mixing and testing. Producing one-off prints allows me to see whether these colours are working with each other harmoniously before going ahead with a new edition.” This new work, printed in editions of 15, should culminate in a show early next year.
