Michael Clark dancers star in Elliot Kennedy’s 80s-inspired menswear shoot

Few young photographers have hit their stride as quickly as Elliot Kennedy. At only 28-years-old, the Jersey-born photographer has already shot the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, collections for British designer Katie Eary and campaigns for Adidas. A thoroughly British export, after graduating from Manchester Metropolitan, Elliot cut his teeth assisting Nick Knight and Gavin Watson before striking out on his own. His portfolio boasts an unvarnished brand of portraiture steeped in subculture and inner-city character that has garnered him commissions from homegrown designers, brands and publications.

In a well-made match, most recently Elliot shot a detail feature for London-based men’s magazine Jocks&Nerds, a title that riffs off a similar penchant for contemporary and classic British style. Styled by Teddy George-Poku, the summer feature pays homage to high-waisted trousers, and Elliot’s black and white images take their 80s-inspired cues from Ray Petri’s Buffalo style, which saw men in skirts and brought streetwear and high fashion into the same looks, as well as the magazine that billed itself as Britain’s original men’s title, Arena. As if this wasn’t enough, the models also happen to be maverick dancers from the ground-breaking Michael Clark Company.
