Illustration: Weird and wonderful images aplenty in Essy May's portfolio

Date

For a little while I was convinced that Essy May was the female alter-ego of London-based illustrator Stevie Gee; the sci-fi, shamanistic ying to his motorcycling, surfer-dude yang. Two parts of the same brain. In fact Essy is Stevie’s other half in a more traditional, long-term relationship sense and not the product of some creative split personality – although I think my confused take on it all was much more exciting.

Essy’s work is pretty freakin’ awesome in its own right; a psychedelic blend of menacing b-movie vixens, extra-terrestrial intervention and an unnerving dose of the occult, tied together with soft, gradient colour-palettes that are evocative of early full-colour moves and that mind-blowing art you get on fairground rides. Right up our street!
