The latest in Etsy’s Handmade Portraits series of short films features Holocaust survivor Yevgeniya Kilupe, who makes incredibly characterful masks in her flat in Latvia. By telescoping her difficult personal history and focussing on her craft, director Asnate Ribena paradoxically makes her own tale even more significant. Although we might get lost in watching her at work, there’s an affecting undercurrent that questions why someone who survived the concentration camps might be so drawn to this particular creative endeavour, so intrictately linked to disguise and misdirection.
