We list our five favourite alternative sources for fashion week coverage

Date
17 September 2014

This week marks the halfway point of Fashion Month, AKA the queen of all trade shows, with Spring Summer 2015 collections being shown in New York, London, Milan and Paris respectively from mid-September to mid-October. Exciting though it is, rummaging through the masses of fashion coverage the internet has to offer can sometimes feel like drowning in an ocean of show reports and final walks, so here’s our rundown of the five best alternative places to see the best of the collections this season.

Charlie Porter

Charlie Porter’s is among the crème de la crème of fashion blogs, steeped in his fresh and unabashedly honest perspective and happily, different to anybody else’s. He once reviewed the sartorial decisions of men he found on Tinder, for example, and he’ll forever remain in our hearts for that time he instagrammed a picture taken inside the sacred bathroom of Nick Candy and Holly Valance.

His excitement about the ten menswear looks which found their way into Meadham Kirchhoff’s Spring Summer 2015 collection yesterday was palpable – “That coat. That wonky shirt, looks like two different cloths. That underwear!” Even better, he flips traditional catwalk images to make the clothes themselves the object. “As with all catwalk photography, I turn it upside down,” he explains, “so you can see through the recognisable image to see the clothes themselves.”

Charlotte Trounce

We’ve posted about Charlotte Trounce’s fashion illustration before and this season she’s upped her output drastically, drawing outfits from key collections almost as soon as they make their way down the catwalk and instagramming them here. Her style is endearing but it’s also surprisingly accurate, capturing key shapes, colours and garments with all of her practised style. There’s still nothing like a garish gingham print as rendered by her speedy pencil, though.

Jamie Stoker

Of all the cameras firing off photograph after photograph at fashion week Jamie Stoker’s has to be one of the most nuanced; his delicate use of unexpected angles and his inimitable ability to capture the atmosphere backstage has led to commissions from the likes of Dazed Digital and Port. This season he’s been running about all over the shop photographing for Yahoo, for which you can see his full coverage here, and there are some gems to be found on his Instagram too.

Helen Bullock

Helen Bullock is another illustrator with a knack for capturing ethereal ensembles and atmospheres, illustrating Christopher Kane’s Spring Summer 2015 collection for AnOther Magazine this season. The collection was poignantly dedicated to the legacy of his mentor and tutor on the Central Saint Martin’s MA Womenswear course, Louise Wilson, who sadly died earlier on this year. As such the designer reworked archival ideas from his graduate collection, and Helen’s raw, linear style was perfect to capture the sentiment present in each garment.

Alexander Fury

Fashion editor of the Independent and expert clothes hoarder, journalist Alexander Fury’s instagram is excellent at at the best of times, but it truly comes into its own during fashion week. Attending shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris, the writer has created a visual language to rival his written one with photographs which illustrate the other side of fashion week, from spotting Miley Cyrus at the Jeremy Scott show – “Miley Cyrus dressed as Su Pollard… Novel” – to the Riot Grrrl-esque imagery on Meadham Kirchhoff’s invitations – “God I love Meadham Kirchhoff.”
