Franciszka and Stefan Themerson: The Eye and The Ear (1945)

This film was an experiment in using the medium of the screen to create an impression for the eye comparable to that experienced by the ear. A common task attempted by graphic designers, but this really works. The second song: St Frances and the third Rowan Towers are the gems. But how was this done in 1945? Stefan developed what he called the “trick table” on which objects were laid on sheets of glass covered with translucent paper, shot as a light passed over. For me these “photograms in motion” can be seen as film and as graphic design.
