Graphic Design: Plymouth College of Art's campaign for more hands-on, physical facilities

Date

One of the things people always take for granted in university are the facilities. It’s only later when you’re staring, dead-eyed at a screen that you realise you should have put in a few extra hours in the dark room, or pulling prints in the screen-printing studio. Plymouth College of Art believes this kind of hands-on learning is vital to creative students realising their potential, despite a worrying trend “towards more convenient desk-based creative learning in the UK,” according to principle Professor Andrew Brewerton.

So, they have got together to make a promotional campaign with YCN Studio to shout from the rooftops about this very topic. In a series of posters and a short film they promote the energy that bursts out of the university thanks to the fantastic equipment the students have on tap. The film and posters capture glimpses of the college’s new £8 million craft and design centre, packed with chunky machines from past, present and future, alongside beautiful close-ups of welding, cutting, painting and photographs being developed.

The message is loud and clear; creativity isn’t a neat, tidy thing — and nor should it be. It’s messy and you need to get stuck in to make things. “We have to make sure our art schools don’t turn into offices and lecture halls,” Brewerton insists. So, if you’re anything like us, this campaign will have you pining for printing machines and pottery wheels in no time.
