Great British Galleries: Hepworth Wakefield

Date
23 March 2012

The architect of the Hepworth Wakefield, David Chipperfield, stresses that building ideas must be unique to the “particular conditions of the project” – for this waterfront gallery, the many-fronted, monolithic concrete structure has a permanence familiar in its surroundings which echoes the sculptural forms of Barbara Hepworth’s artistic legacy. It is the largest purpose-built exhibition space outside of London, with its exhibitions reflecting that scale and the conditions of the individual spaces within as an intimate and ambitious venue for art.
