Great British Galleries: The De La Warr Pavilion

Date
20 March 2012

Sitting in the genteel south coast town of Bexhill-on-Sea, The De La Warr Pavilion is a modernist icon designed by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff which opened in 1935. Like the building itself, the programme defies the rather traditional environs and in the two years I lived in the area I saw everything from a talk by Will Self and a brilliant exhibition of post-war American photography to a collaboration between Beardyman and The Heritage Orchestra. It’ll make a good day-out double bill with the newly-opened Jerwood in Hastings, but something tells me the De La Warr isn’t ready to relinquish its place as that area’s artistic frontrunner.
