“Light” is the operative word when talking about the Turner Contemporary in Margate. “Light is therefore colour” said JMW Turner, the gallery’s namesake, a resident of the town in which time he created some of his most extraordinary work and studies of the skies over the Thanet area, declaring at one point that they are “the loveliest in all Europe.” Honouring this, architect David Chipperfield created an extraordinary building that would absorb the ever-changing, “legendary” natural conditions and uninterrupted views of the sea so that work might be seen in the very light, and from the exact spot, that inspired one of the most important British artists ever.
