Icelandic design grad Helga Dögg's experimental zines are a delight

Newly graduated graphic designer Helga Dögg has got a great stack of projects on her website, giving just a taster of her style and interests. Based in Reykjavik, Helga attended the Icelandic Academy of Arts and is keen to focus on book, website and editorial design.

One stand out project includes a branding project set while she was at uni for a noodle restaurant, which needed to appeal to a “younger, hipper clientele”. For the identity Helga adapted found examples of old Thai type in newspapers and combined it with more modern typefaces. The contrast pops against the bright colours of the food and wine menus.

Zines also feature heavily in Helga’s portfolio and it’s something she “loves” to do. Choosing a topic that interests her, the designer pulls together images and text she finds online on Trip Advisor. Standouts include Gullfoss Og Geysir a zine about Iceland’s most famous waterfall and Bæjarinz Bezta Röd, which is about a famous queue for hotdogs in Iceland where Bill Clinton once lined up for one.

Helga is currently looking for a full time design job, but it’s refreshing to see her building on her portfolio and still creating experimental zines that play around with type, composition and layout.
