Illustration: Spectacular updates from the ever-talented Sarah Maycock

Back in 2011 Sarah Maycock was one of the It’s Nice That Graduates, and has since been fondly remembered in the studio as “the one that did the bear” – referring to her enormous print of a bear we exhibited in the small show that gained her a truckload of fans. Since then she’s been non-stop illustrating, with an enormous amount of high-end clients hounding her for her beautiful, instantly recognisable artwork. It’s been a while since we caught up with her, so Sarah kindly sent over a bunch of new projects and some information about what she’s been up to of late. A lot, it turns out.

“Over the last six months, I have worked on so many interesting projects as well as moved house and studio twice. Just after I graduated I was lucky enough to make a video for the musician Imogen Heap and have recently started working with her again to create a limited edition print for her Pledge campaign for her new album Sparks, out in May. I made 24 drawings of objects which were integral to the production of the album. The real objects were then whizzed up and turned into paper, on to which my drawings have been printed. Absolutely thrilled to still be working with her, she is a hero of mine. Never met anyone more driven.

Another album which is out this May is the third album from Tom Williams and the Boat, Easy Fantastic. I worked with them on their second album Teenage Blood in 2012. For this record, we wanted something with lots of movement and colour but also simplicity, and found a woman called Jemma Lewis who makes absolutely gorgeous marbled paper. Cropping right in on a tiny patch gave us the shapes we wanted. All the handwriting used throughout the campaign is mine.

A client approached my agency, Handsome Frank (who are brilliant by the way) looking for an illustrator to make some inky abstract cloud and seascapes for large silk scarves. I really needed something at the time to loosen up again and I absolutely loved making these and can’t wait to see the finished product. I have worked on a few projects which have given me itchy feet and made me want to use my legs and see some new places. The Wellcome Insititute have launched an online magazine called Mosaic and for the launch they asked me to make a set of drawings about cycling in different cities like San Francisco, Paris, London and Copenhagen. I also made some images for Woman’s Weekly to accompany a five part story set in early 20th century Russia and a culinary map of Istanbul."
