Welcome: Time to meet our newest intern, say hello to Emily Beber!

Hey everyone, fancy getting to know the newest member of team It’s Nice That. You would? Well great – doff your collective cap to Emily Beber, our latest intern. Not content with a History of Art degree she is currently half way through a Masters in Critical Writing in Art and Design at the Royal College of Art, which not only proves her serious pedigree but also makes her better qualified than me. Before though we let her loose on the site to share her wisdom with y’all it’s right and proper to get to know her a little better; find out why her phonetic namesake has caused problems in the past and which fruit/crisp/sweet combination makes for a delicious snack…

How do you explain what you do to your parents?

That I write about interesting things. Strange things. About interesting people, great music, brilliant art. I often tell them about the initial idea, manically, and they wait for it to change. They had to suffer all of the bizarre stories I wrote growing up, so have been prepped for this for quite a long time.

Who do you look like?

At the moment I have no idea. I shaved my head two years ago and had to work out the Justin-Bieber-short-sides-swooshing-fringe look over the course of a year. It was painful. Made worse by clash of our surnames – Beber/Bieber. There were a lot of hats. Someone once told me that I looked like “that rapper.” I’m good with that.

Did your education count?

Definitely, though I took a strange route to get to where I am now, narrowly escaping a career in Zoology realising, after three years of biology A Level, that I actually sucked at it. I wasn’t one for the concise answer. I’m currently doing a Masters in Critical Writing in Art and Design at the Royal College of Art and for the first time in my education, things feel exactly right.

What’s the best mistake you have ever made?

Teenage rebellion, moving to South Africa for a year when I was 19. I grew up, quickly.

When did you realise that this is what you were good at?

Not until this year. Six months spent writing about the incredible Jeff Nuttall cracked it, coupled with an article about Seapunk.

What rues do you live by?

Dance madly. Anywhere. To anything. Everyday.

What makes your day?

A free bag of salty popcorn. Then again, the old man I saw in hot pants on roller skates in Flashback record store yesterday pretty much made my year.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A lady farmer who drove and aeroplane, rode a motorbike and had 10 kids, two cats, two dogs and was a writer and illustrator at the same time. Big dreams.

What one thing would you like to be remembered by/for?

Being in that band WE who wear boxes on their head.

What’s your favourite combination?

Beyoncé power ballads, on a run, in a field. Or if we’re doing food – a Hula Hoop, a Smartie and a grape. Beautiful.

What’s the funniest thing you have EVER seen?

My non-dancing dad being dragged onto the dance floor at my sister’s graduation in Glasgow, forced into a ceilidh and constantly turning the wrong way.
