Introducing...Young London-based graphic designer Jonathan Roberts

Date
19 March 2013

Young graphic designer Jonathan Roberts reached out to let us know that he’d just launched a new website and what we found made us sit up and take notice. Jonathan has a really solid portfolio, with printed work which shows a good understanding of current trends without slavishly imitating them and he also engages in some interesting research work which is sure to feed back into his commissioned projects.

Liking what we saw, we reached out to find out a bit more from the man himself…

Where do you work?

I seem to move around a lot, which means my work space changes often. It’s usually just wherever there is space for a desk and a computer. I find, as I am sure other creative minded people do, that much of my idea generation isn’t confined to a desk, but through general everyday circumstances. Finding and seeing things helps me trigger ideas.

Where does your working day start

Ideally with tea, eggs, BBC news and then onto emails.

How do you work and how has that changed?

I’ve always enjoyed researching a lot, whether that’s through books, the web, exhibitions or archives. I find that helps me pin down and understand what I want to achieve. This seems to make me more efficient during the creative process, as otherwise I would procrastinate and chop and change ideas too much for my own good. I can’t say that this has changed much since being a student – I’ve always known that this way works best for me.

Where would we find you when you’re not at work?

When I’m not at work, you’ll find me in the kitchen, watching films, at galleries or on the squash court.

Would you Intern for yourself?

I would love to intern for myself. I have always found the designer as author movement very appealing; I guess that’s when a designer can turn to being an artist. I would need a winning lottery ticket first though.
