Introducing...The outstanding, mind-boggling sci-fi world of illustrator Kilian Eng

Date

Get. Out. Of. Town. How does this man exist? Why has Sweden been hiding him from us for all of these years? If you ever watched films such as Flight of the Navigator or The Dark Crystal then this will most likely be right up your sci-fi street. Mirrored palaces at twilight, infinite skylines and tropical forest covered planets are the kind of settings you can expect from this absolute dreamweaver of an illustrator, and lots of it. There’s such a copious amount of work just spilling out of his brain, it’s like his portfolio is one of those streamers that once you start unravelling just keeps on going until eternity.

The man took time out of his day, and took a step out of his own world, to answer some questions for us. So here we are, introducing Kilian Eng. You can find more of his work on Debut Art.

Where do you work?

At the moment I have my work space at home. Getting a studio space is something I’m considering though.

How does your working day start?

A quick walk to get the system going and then starting to work around 10am. Routine is quite important when being involved in client-based jobs, I try to finish that part of the working day around 5pm like other jobs. When it comes to personal work it’s much more about doing it when i feel like it, which is quite often.

How do you work and how has it changed?

I work digitally and draw on a wacom tablet. Actually I have been using this tool for many years now so I never transferred from paper and pen to the digital when working commercially. However I would say that the biggest change is just that, the digital step. I have noticed that I have far less pens and sketch books lying around these days.

Where would we find you when you’re not at work?

Ideally out in nature.

Would you intern for yourself?

I don`t think that would work so well. As an illustrator your actual drawing process isn`t so much team work so if I was and intern it would more feel like I was in the way, bothering myself when drawing. It would be hard to find something meaningful to do I think.
