They have beauty, they have grace, they are Jack Mears’ ceramic dogs

Date
28 July 2016

Illustrator Jack Mears has a canine fascination that seems to inform much of his oeuvre. His collection of ceramic dogs captures the dignity and poise of man’s best friend, as they lounge, do the bridge and cock their legs for optimum territory marking opportunities. The dogs have consistently tiny heads, and bodies that are either impractically long or uncomfortably close to the human form. Shot on lurid canary or peach backgrounds, the pack are a surreal bunch and joyfully slapstick, with the odd bit of abstraction thrown in for good, artistic measure. Jack has also found a potentially lucrative gap in the market for ceramic dachshunds as mug handles.
