Jacob Yarwood’s paintings produce “moments rather than goals or agendas”

Within Cornish Camberwell graduate Jacob Yarwood’s paintings is a frequently satisfying contrast. On the surface it is often colour combinations that create a divergence in between shapes, a modern example of curvaceous still lifes.

However when you learn of Jacob’s background, a shift from the countryside to the UK’s capital, the paintings gain a different kind of clarity. “I was brought up in the most southerly point of Cornwall, and after studying my art foundation in Falmouth, I jumped ship and moved to south London where I studied BA Painting at Camberwell and have settled for the last few years,” he tells It’s Nice That. “I live here for the green areas and easy access directly south of London on my bike. Being able to experience both the city and the countryside easily and quickly is key to my work and my sanity!

As a result, Jacob’s paintings “explore both the indoor and outdoor environments that I inhabit,” he explains. From shapes that echo the greenery of either Peckham Rye or Penzance the paintings “focus on certain characteristics, objects and structures that represent experiences and memories from throughout my life”. Displaying overall that “life is about moments rather than goals or agendas”.

Jacob’s exhibition Ticket runs until 25 June 2017 at Hix Art, Shoreditch.
