Jeffrey Cheung's cheekily innocent drawings of naughty content

Date
7 September 2016

The illustrative paintings of Jeffrey Cheung are nostalgic and cheeky at the same time. His style is almost reminiscent of children’s books, with Quentin Blake-like drawings of distinctive characters. However, Jeffrey adds a little bit of raunchy humour that makes these brazen illustrations for an adult audience.

Jeffrey is an artist who grew up in the San Fransisco Bay area and despite always being “interested in drawings and painting,” it wasn’t until, “I met my partner Gabriel Ramirez in 2011, when we started a project together called Unity Press, to put out our zines and prints” that he pursued an artistic career. Inspired by, “the people in my community, my family, and Lower Grand Radio”, Jeffrey has developed his own stylistic process. Consistently working in pastel colours, he often uses a rich contrast of pink nudes against a royal blue background. The result is a collection of paintings of flustered bodies in expressive risqué positions. Their chuckling expressions are brilliantly bold, the artist’s skill making the works appear quite innocent despite their naughty content.

Jeffrey is currently preparing for the New York Art Book Fair next week with Unity Press and additionally will be showing a new series of paintings and drawings for a solo show at Hashimoto Gallery in San Fransisco early next year.
