I couldn’t begin to bend my mind round how high-definition technology actually works – perhaps that’s why I find Jim Campbell’s work so compelling. His preoccupation with movement and how we perceive it (with light) is brilliantly reduced, yet infinitely more immersive than a liquid crystal canvas. In one of his vast installations, Scattered Light that appeared in Madison Square Park last year, spectral figures move with unmistakable purpose across a suspended frame holding hundreds of bulbs, mimicking pixels. An exhibition of Campbell’s temporal plays on perception is soon to be installed at the SFMoMA.
