Search Jim Stoten’s name in the It’s Nice That archive and you’ll find an assortment of projects stretching back eight years (eight years!) which, while maintaining his always bright, often bizarre and occasionally psychedelic style, seem to get more enjoyable with each commission. It’s not often we come across such a talent, and God knows we spend a lot of time looking for them, so you’ll understand our excitement at presenting the illustrator’s most recent project – an ad campaign for British staple Marmite, entitled Summer of Love Not Hate.

Riffing off the brand’s well-established tagline “love it or hate it,” Jim came up with a pair of characters; one is a sweet, joyful, acoustic guitar-playing hippy cat with a taste for the sour stuff, and the other a bad-tempered green monster who, unsurprisingly, is a less of a fan. There are campaign images, whose bright palettes seem to enter into direct combat for your eye-space, and an animation, which is complete with a schizophrenic soundtrack, and there’s more than enough of Jim’s trademark sense of humour to each.
