You know you’ve stumbled across something curious when an artwork’s caption reads like ingredients. “Untitled Installation, 2007, lard, newspaper, blood, tea, coffee” is the caption below four headstones bedecked with red (coffee, blood?) flowers, created by RCA graduate Jodie Carey – expert at harnessing household names for artistic purposes. The pieces appear to be delicate and feminine until you realise just what it’s made of – themes of death linger around her work in a strange combination of the fragile, yet still mundane aspects of life and the afterlife. Check out her wallpaper design made of cigarette ash, and the chandeliers and wedding cakes made of bones.
