Johann Kauth's awesome psychedelic trips to the counterculture

Date
7 January 2015

We featured Johann’s work a couple of years ago when he had just graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s graphic design programme. Described by his then screen printing master as working “ghetto style,” with hand-drawn layers, energetic line work and confident colour-ways, Johann seems to have come a long way without losing any of that skilled spontaneity.

The Amsterdam-based illustrator has been working on some great record sleeves and show posters for the likes of Ducktails and Lucky Dragons. Both his commissions and personal work make confident aesthetic references to 70s Californian punk and psychedelia, with a chaotic disregard of colour theory and nicely offset optical illusions.
