Ever since I was a child I’ve had an almost perverse obsession with masked figures. I find the power of a fixed expression utterly terrifying and beautiful in equal measures, and mask design has since become a key feature in much of my work. When I first watched Georges Franju’s remake of 1914 serial Judex, I became obsessed with this scene. The Power of the initial reveal stirs up that same sense of fear that plagued me as a child, whilst I simultaneously drool over the craftsmanship of the masks.
