"It's all about colour, contrast and fun": we catch up with Krass magazine

“There is a ceremony to printed matter. You hold on to it, you share it. There is an enchantment and a tenacity to print that is more than nostalgia. For all the times people have said that print is dead, its resurrection has proven them wrong.”

From this, it sounds like Krass magazine is having no “difficult second album” issues. Quite the opposite. Heralding the launch of the mag’s latest issue, it sounds like its co-founder Sanja Grozdanic can’t believe her luck. “Action is the best education,” she says. “Our first issue was very honest and naïve – we didn’t expect to attract international stockists, attend the book fairs or be welcomed into the community of publishers we are lucky enough to be a part of. Now there’s no turning back.”

For Krass 2, the publication is exploring the idea of vulnerability. “We explore the fact that we are all in this (this world, this struggle) together,” Sanja explains. “Krass is all about self-realisation. In Issue 02, we speak to people who are engaged and active, sensitive-aggressive, unmoored and creating their own traditions.”

The issues features including words from Noam Chomsky, Audrey Wollen and filmmakers Maya Newell and Charlotte Mars, who explain their documentary Gayby Baby. “Their story is both vast and intimate. Exposure to different stories breeds empathy and compassion, and we’re all about that,” says Sonja.

Design wise, the issue doesn’t detract too far from its predecessor. Sanja explains:
“We’re lucky enough to work with Simon Pearce from Frame Creative and Kirby Manning, who are infinitely talented in making a vessel of words look fine. As always, it’s all about colour, contrast and fun.”
