Laylah Ali

Date
21 April 2011

Laylah Ali paints some of the weirdest characters we’ve ever seen. Often strange-looking and frequently tribal, her figures are seemingly comedic until second looks reveal sinister motivations. These people (are they people?) are policemen, warriors, slaves and priests embroiled, it seems, in imminent wrongdoings. Ali is documenting contemporary political problems, in a way that seems specific but that can in fact be applied to all of us, everywhere.
