Lennarts & De Bruijn and Tomas Laar create a typographic identity for the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague

Netherlands-based studio Lenaarts & De Bruijn and Tomas Laar have created this patriotic-looking identity for the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague’s annual open day. Using a combination of red, blue and white, a typographic approach has been employed by Tomas and the studio founded by Max Lenaarts and Menno De Bruijn, who are all graduates of the art school.

“We created the campaign based around the idea of [the school] being a community and its internationality,” says the studio. Called The State of the Art, the mix of sans serif fonts in different weights enhances this idea of community full of individual differences with the colour palette acting as an anchor to unify them. Exclamation marks and individual letters are used as visual flourishes and a graphic icon of a gridded globe is another allusion to the all-encompassing nature of the school. Along with posters, a wayfinding system and programme for the open day, the team also created a website and promo film to celebrate the day and raise awareness.
